The Muslim Brotherhood group has been designated by the Egyptian state as terrorist since late 2013. In a leaked audio recording, a Muslim Brotherhood member revealed financial irregularities and embezzlement among the group’s leaders who have fled to Turkey.

The audio, which was leaked by Omar Hassan, a Muslim Brotherhood member, is believed to belong to Amir Bassam, a former member of the Shura Council during the rule of Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated former President Mohamed Morsi who died in June 2019.

Bassam complained in the audio against Mahmoud Hussein’s son, the secretary-general of the Muslim Brotherhood group, who bought a car for $100,000 to stroll through the streets of Istanbul, while the rest of the group’s youth in Turkey were eager to obtain financial aid of no more than TL 200. He said that he does not recognize those leaders who embezzle the group’s money and donations to buy luxurious apartments, whether in Turkey or elsewhere.

Bassam said that he is loyal to the group’s guide Mahmoud Ezzat and Mohamed Badie, the group’s supreme guide, refusing to recognize Mahmoud Hussein and Ibrahim Mounir.

According to information that Saudi Al-Arabiya said it could obtain, a dispute started when a Muslim Brotherhood figure donated $2 million, which were then given to three leaders of the group in Turkey. According to the information, the three leaders bought a residential furnished building in Turkey for $1.2 million, while another $700,000 were given to the three individuals. The remaining $100,000 were spent to buy the son of Mahmoud Hussein a modern car, which was mentioned by Bassam in the recording.
