The jihadist under house

The jihadist under house

By Vincenzo Cotroneo

Two news in the last 24 hours that intersect and present a dark design made of black future plots. The problem is once again an overestimation of a general consideration of what remains of the Islamic State after the fall of its earthly strongholds.

On the one hand, the news of the Italian boy who died fighting in Syria among the Kurdish army, during a clash that took place at the beginning of December last year, put under the magnifying lens the problem of the consistency and the current presence of bags of belligerency with the registration of the Islamic State that is still present in the Syrian and Iraqi area and that has support for logistic survival, weapons and supplies.

On the other hand, the news of today’s blitz carried out by the Ros of the Carabinieri in Sicily and other Italian regions, in an operation coordinated by the DDA of Palermo, which has allowed to arrest 15 subjects this morning for having committed a series of crimes such as smuggling, human trafficking and because they helped to leave the country, transporting in boats to the Sicilian coasts people wanted in Tunisia for having committed crimes related to terrorism. Nothing new. The danger of this economic reality that travels in that arm of the sea between the Sicilian coast and the Tunisian beaches, where those who try to escape from the investigations and the police, finds quieter shores than in Libya, had already been pointed out several times.

Among the fifteen detainees, a former jihadist who says he is sorry for his previous behavior has caused a special commotion. Observed for some time by the Carabinieri, the man, had on his computer a series of videos and audios that praised the Islamic State and files with pictures and images of the horrors of torture, violence and beheadings to which hundreds of men and women opposed to ISIS and their abominable ideology have been subjected. In the past, the man publicly supported the Islamic State, instigating terrorism, invoking death and the attacks in Italy in the name of Allah, justifying every activity and operation of Daesh in the occupied areas of Europe through its killers. He said he regretted and wanted to cooperate with justice to avoid meeting with “an army of kamikazes in Italy”; it sounds strange that a former fervent supporter of Daesh uses kamikaze instead of shahid, that is a witness for the martyrdom of the faith.

The Tunisian man spoke to researchers of a large circle of a large number of alleged terrorist in Tunisia who migrate to Italy not on Libyan boats, but on faster motorboats that in a few hours cross the distance between the Tunisian beaches and Italy. Thanks to the work done through his profiles in the social network, it has been possible to trace the names of other people supposedly linked to the maritime travel market and to overseas terrorist organizations. This introduces in a univocal common thread; the news regarding the presence of dozens of characters on whom the attention of our secret services is placed with great emphasis. Among these characters are those who are still in the prisons of the territory between Syria and Iraq, fighting against the armed forces of the Kurdish army and against those of the coalition present in the area. These subjects, approximately one hundred people, are linked to Italy, for having passed or resided in the country, or because the regular but converted, radicalized Italians have traveled to fight alongside their new brothers of the black flag . In particular, it is known that about 90%, are men with an average age of 30 when entering Daesh. The youngest person on the list is a 16-year-old girl who resides abroad, while the oldest fighter is a 52-year-old Moroccan citizen.

Unlike in other Western European countries, most foreign fighters linked to Italy were born abroad: 40 were born in Tunisia, 26 in Morocco, 14 in Syria and 6 in Iraq, 11 in Western European countries and 11 in Balkan countries. Only 11 people (equal to 8.8% of the total) were born in Italy. Among the regions of origin, Lombardy clearly stands out, but there are also significant presences in Emilia Romagna and Veneto. Among the provinces, the relevance of the Milan area is confirmed. The choice of affiliation is more concentrated in the ranks of the Islamic State but there are also those who have preferred other formations such as In Jabhat al-Nusra, the Free Syrian Army, Jaysh al-Islam or Suleiman Fighting Company. The security forces focus mainly on the specific risk of a blowback effect, that is, the possibility that, once they return to their countries of origin, they can act also in Italy. Military training coupled with the charism of veterans is a strong element of induction to give returnees a threat as great as their experience in the ranks of Daesh in Syria and Iraq.

Those who insist on closing quickly the chapters of the war against terrorism saying that today it makes no sense to talk about ISIS, should review their documents and the elements on which they base their statements.

A stronghold may have been destroyed, but the ideological battle against this monster is still very long and needs the help of the best intelligence services and adequate forces and a serious project of defense and security that fights against any hypothesis of danger, without neglecting, in the name of the false do-goodism or pseudo “politically correct”, the use of force and extreme determination against any Islamic terrorist regurgitation, which is the exact representation of all that our society, bewildered and, sometimes, not too bright , still does after centuries of war; to never to be the same again.
