Acmid Donna Onlus Association among the winners in the XXIX Edition of the Minerva Anna Maria Mammoliti Award

Being in the forefront of the defense of human rights: why? Spending time to defend even those who we do not know personally or we do not know too well and fighting in the jungle of violence infested by the timeless orcs that vampire human lives: why? Because we feel in our own skin the atrocities and pains suffered by the weakest. Therefore, it is a duty to reward, value and listen to people who act as a sounding board for the most vulnerable; people who give voice to those who have lost even their voice.

These people should be looked forward to like the night of San Lorenzo. They must be awarded and they must be known because it is a moral imperative to listen to the words that come out of their mouth, often too dry due to the dryness caused by the common indifference, that voice that cries out for help! In Italy, the voices of the most vulnerable have been heard; Their lives have been defended and for their rights there are meritorious people who fight – or rather, personalities for their merits – and have been deservedly rewarded. Yesterday it was recognized with the Minerva Award, the first Italian prize dedicated to women that has the sponsorship of the President of the Republic, created by Anna Maria Mammoliti, founder of “The Women’s Club” in 1983 and of the monthly publication called Minerva. A prize for women who work in the field of “Knowledge” and who, symbolically, represent exemplary female models due to their professional skills and positive values . A man was also awarded for his professional and human contribution to society. The prize is a gold brooch with precious stones representing Minerva’s head that was designed by Master Renato Guttuso.

Laila Maher was one of the winners, honorary president of the free telephone number “Mai più sola” (Never more alone) of Acmid Donna Onlus (Association of Moroccan Women in Italy) where Italian and Moroccan women have been working for many years to promote the meeting between Mediterranean cultures, spreading Moroccan culture, helping immigrant women to get out of the drama of illiteracy, informing women about their rights and duties and supporting them in the integration process, without this implying the loss of their traditions.

And behind a great woman, there is always … a great woman – let’s be honest – and in fact, as president, founder and creator of ACMID, there is Souad Sbai; a woman always in the forefront in the struggle for the defense of women’s rights and human rights, writer of a lot of essays and articles that give voice to those who do not have it, and former member of the Italian Parliament where she built the arena to fight for the most vulnerable people, who are often the most forgotten.

“It is an honor for us to have received the Minerva Award, mainly because it means recognition of the work carried out by the association to defend the rights of women and children harassed by violence and abuse that often ends up with their life.” These are the statements made by Souad Sbai; few words but full of truth; She is like that: far from the spotlight because she is always busy on the front line where she dodges bullets and risks her own body to protect those who can no longer defend themselves.

Acmid, Souad Sbai and people like Adriana Cantiani: the muscles of the honorable association that confirm to be a fixed point for those who need help. People worthy of reflecting the golden light of the prize awarded.
