Qatar pays better than Saudi Arabia

Emir Al Thani in Italy on a state visit

Surely there will be protests against this visit

The fact of having contributed, together with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s Turkey, to the funding of what would later become the Islamic State, is evidently considered by someone a merit achieved the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani; so far as to convince the president of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, to invite him to visit Italy on November 20 to attend a state meeting that has not been trumpeted; it has been hidden but not hidden enough to escape the journalist and writer Souad Sbai (former member of the Italian Parliament) who a few days ago, criticized the visit to Doha made by Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini to meet with the emir who now returns the visit.

Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, as well as Erdoğan, is also one of the worst enemies of Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. His Islamic network belongs to the “Ikhuan”, to the Muslim Brotherhood that in Egypt was outlawed by General Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi after having overthrown Mohamed Morsi. The “Brothers” are considered members of a terrorist sect by the rest of the world.

“As reported by United Nations and by other organizations such as Amnesty International, Qatar has long been under the lens of the International Community for funding terrorism and extremist groups linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, for human rights violations and for the violent repression against the internal opposition. Qatar’s profile is that of a rogue State, with which Italy should have no relationship” explains Souad Sbai to L’Opinione. But of course, Qatar is a country full of money and sovereign funds that have interest in Italy, including the sponsoring of Serie A football teams.

This way of understanding realpolitik clashes with the claim to keep the preaching of Islamic extremism away from Italy due to the emir also subsidizes the network of preaching (“dawa”) of the Muslim Brotherhood and therefore the do-it-yourself mosques. Souad Sbai also explains that “through the weapon of its vast amount of financial resources, Qatar is buying the condescension of the world of politics, economy and other sectors of crucial importance for the Italian ruling class, who seems to have eliminated any defense against the advance of the Islamist project made by Doha regime and by the Muslim Brotherhood in Italy. I appeal to President Mattarella’s great institutional sense to revoke the decision to receive the Emir Al Thani, thus taking advantage of the opportunity to start a new course in the relationships between Italy and Qatar.”

Surely there will be protests against this visit, possibly there will be a demonstration organized by the community of Moroccan women in Italy, the most developed community in the Islamic world in terms of militant feminism.

However, in Qatar, the female issue is an example of medieval obscurantism.
